The program will feature works by three living American composers, William Buelow, Rick Sowash, and Paul Schoenfield. William Buelow, former composition professor at Marietta College in Ohio now makes his home in Vonore, Tennessee. His hauntingly beautiful composition, "Columbine" will open the program.
Cincinnati based composer Rick Sowash has made his living as an educator, music consultant, author, performer, storyteller, banquet speaker, with a line of books, audio tapes of me telling funny stories, etc.). and has made it his mission to give his music away for free to ensembles and individuals who wish to perform it. His most recent concerto for cello, clarinet, and strings, recently received its Carnegie Hall debut. Other works have been recorded by the Mirecourt trio and many others.
American jazz composer and pianist Paul Schoenfield wrote "Cafe Music" when he was was commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and inspired by his turn as house pianist at Murray's steakhouse in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Composed in 1986, it received it's premier with the SPCO in 1987 with Schoenfield at the piano.
